Efficiency is a movement of work. Autonomy is a movement of who may finish it.

Operations used to ask how to shorten a cycle. That question remains. A second question now sits beside it: which steps are allowed to complete when no one is watching.

Work can sit in several states:

AUTOMATABLE — technically eligible to run without a person. ASSISTED — a person works with a machine in the same act. SUPERVISED — the machine acts; a person is accountable for watching. AUTONOMOUS — the machine completes the act. HUMAN RESERVED — the act is not delegated, even if it could be.

These states are not a maturity ladder. Moving a step toward autonomy can reduce process latency and weaken exception handling in the same motion. Knowledge transfer can occur as a side effect of automation, or fail as a side effect of extraction fear. Service quality may rise on the average case and collapse on the case the training data never named.

Escalation is an operations design, not a feeling. If exception handling sits with sales, the customer remains close and the model learns slowly. If it sits with a central AI team, patches may be faster and the customer waits on an invisible queue. If it sits everywhere, it may sit nowhere when the file is already committed.

Proposal preparation at 19 hours is a latency number. Reducing it is not the same as deciding who may send the result.

IN THE SIMULATOR

Decision 01 moves activities along this spectrum. Research can become autonomous while commitment remains reserved. Or the entire path can be made autonomous in a quarter.

Later decisions—approval thresholds, exception ownership, override rights—decide whether the new latency is leverage or a second queue. Q2's productivity is an operations outcome. Q3's dispute is also an operations outcome, arriving on a delay.

Watch proposal time and sales capacity. Then watch who handles the case that did not fit the proposal.
